Metamorphosis

29 Oct

This image is from the series Metamorphosis: Images from the Arab World by Michael Robinson Chávez, who is currently working for The Los Angeles Times. His photo-journalistic biography is more than impressive while his images are completely disturbing and oh so powerful! I am in absolute awe of his work.

You need to see it to believe it! He is GOOD!

“The only way to solve the problem is to teach kids to take care of each other.”

Ashley MacKenzie is an emerging illustrator from Toronto.
I couldn’t find much info on Ashley and personally, this illustration is probably her best of what I did find, but it’s definitely worth checking out how she develops. She shows a beautiful awareness and I imagine she’ll be drawing inspiration for years to come.

‘orange love’ by margré mijer

orange love

Taken at the Taj Mahal the viewer gets a slight glimpse of public affection, which is not common behaviour in India.

This is such a beautiful, vibrant image. I get a sense of buoyancy as the couple stride down the stairs, perhaps it’s because of the fleeting sari the woman wears. There’s a beautiful connection between the two and the orange colour is outstanding. The subtle detail in this moment of affection, captured at the perfect time, lets us make our own reading of the people in the shot. Sometimes giving less information lets the viewer indulge in the image on a greater level. It activates the imagination and we can devise our own story. ‘Orange Love’ does this beautifully.

mini manila

I recently  saw a new performance work that left me excited, inspired and absolutely exhilarated.

WITHIN AND WITHOUT

by Paschal Daantos Berry and Deborah Pollard
with Valerie Berry and Anino Shadowplay Collective
                                                                                    Image: Datu Arellano
The work, rich in imagery, audience participation and sensory engagement, is in a league of its own. It is a reproduction of the city Manila. “Mini Manila” is made from recycled cardboard boxes, where shadowplay and surround-sound environments evoke the complete image. The work opens with the audience being welcomed by two of the artists, who then ask us to stand in a marked out circle and put a blind fold on. A soundscape builds and a blend of smells including incense smoke fill the room, drawing a vivid picture of the city lifestyle in your imagination. Immediately, we are placed in the chaos and excitement that is Manila. The audience is then taken into another room, where we first witness the city landscape made of cardboard boxes, and are taken on a series of tours through the city, learning about buildings, culture and history. We enjoy a festival, some local cuisine and a range of beautifully constructed images of shadows by Anino Shadowplay Collective.
Take a look at some of Anino Shadowplay Collective’s work in Within and Without here:
I took a few photos with my phone at the end of the show. You’ll see some of the cardboard city.

Splitscreen: A Love Story
by JW Griffiths

This is a beautiful little film with a sweet ending, but it’s the rhythm of the imagery that really captures me. The unity and subtle merging of moments are striking. It’s well constructed, hypnotic even, as I drift into a calming state with a growing smile on my face. It’s not even the happy ending I care so much for, but what the images are telling me about the city, reflecting a colourful journey through a regular day. Have a watch. It’s truly gorgeous.
